Leadership knowledge of lean principles and their behaviour in supporting teams implement the principles of lean in their areas is the single biggest factor in a successful lean programme. A key part of this is known as Leader Standard Work, a structured programme of process confirmation and team coaching that allows leaders to use time at the ‘gemba’ (the place where the action is occurring) to coach teams in kaizen and lean. Another area associated with this is known as Lean Kata. This again involves leaders coaching their teams in improvement activity using a structured methodology, but including the principle of Standards and a Target Condition to lead the discussions. We have coached many business leaders in these techniques and can demonstrate that they are a powerful way to lead in a lean environment, and to develop the capability of your teams at all levels.
